Katy and Jonathan matched on the dating app “Coffee Meets Bagel”. Jonathan has screenshots of their initial conversation which contains an embarrassing amount of exclamation points and smiley faces. This makes sense as they were both on cheer in high school.
Katy and Jonathan met on November 16, 2017 at a bar called “The Imperial” in Goleta, CA. It was a Thursday night and Katy was wearing all black with fun earrings and Jonathan was wearing red pants and a blue button down. The Imperial has a speakeasy/tiki vibe with red velvet couches and fantastic cocktails — perfect for a first date.
First Impressions
Katy liked Jonathan’s easy smile and outfit. She was immediately attracted to his “man hands” and his voice. Jonathan thought Katy was beautiful and was impressed by how easy she was to talk with. Jonathan told his mom that Katy was “out of his league”. Katy told her roommate that Jonathan was “husband material”.
Katy and Jonathan went on four dates in the first week of knowing each other. They each could tell that this was something special. Jonathan was Katy’s first date in Santa Barbara. She had just moved to the area to start her PhD in psychology. Jonathan, a Santa Barbara native and software engineer at a local start-up, was dealing with the very small Santa Barbara dating pool. Over the past 5 years of dating Katy and Jonathan learned a lot about their similarities and how they complement each other.
Random Similarities
A Year of Challenges
Every relationship goes through stressors, but Katy and Jonathan were committed to doing life together. During April 2020 Katy moved in with Jonathan and his parents and they created a Covid bubble. In June of 2020 they started extensive renovations on their new house. In August of 2020 they brought 8-week-old Jackson, a golden retriever puppy, to their upstairs apartment. In November of 2020, they finally moved into their new house with a 5 month old puppy and ongoing renovation projects.
Katy and Jonathan figure if they can handle a pandemic, living with in-laws, demanding careers, working from home and seeing each other all the time, ongoing home renovations, and a crazy cute, sharp-tooth, must be carried down the stairs every 30 minutes to pee, puppy monster— all at the same time—they can probably handle whatever life throws at them. They also realized that they are stronger as a pair.
Building a Life Together
Over the years Katy and Jonathan worked on their relationship and built a life together. They both value family, friendships, hard work, and making time for fun. Both of them have easy laughs and they crack each other up. They both find joy in the small things in life - holding hands, walking their dog Jackson on the beach, really good food, and hanging out with friends around the firepit. They are both summer, sunshine (though Jonathan must have shade), and California people. They especially love those long summer days and warm nights which is why they are getting married in July.
Katy and Jonathan are so excited to have you at their wedding. For them, their wedding is about celebrating their love for each other, bringing together two families and groups of loved ones who shaped and supported each of them, and the ritual of publicly declaring their commitment to do life together. They can’t wait to see you!
